Frequently Asked Questions / Helpful Tips

Old or new it is an investment . . .
Your heating and air conditioning system represents a significant, ongoing investment. In either case you will want to maintain its operation at a peak efficiency levels for the greatest comfort and energy savings. To help you achieve optimum performance, energy savings and clear up any misconceptions which may exist about your heating and air conditioning system, we present you with these seasonal tips:

HOT Heating Tips

  • Consider a programmable thermostat to maintain comfort levels automatically for optimum energy savings while home or away.
  • Set your thermostat to conserve energy if you plan to be away from home for a day or more, but don't turn your system off during the winter or summer while you are away.
  • Locate heat producing appliances or lamps near your thermostat. The heat they give off will affect the performance of your thermostat.
  • Check your return air grilles and clean them occasionally to remove dust buildup which restricts air flow
  • Do not block registers and grilles with furniture, rugs, toys, etc. which restricts the circulation. Closing too many registers is also true. When your air circulation is restricted, your system must work harder and longer to provide comfortable temperature levels.
  • Keep your filter clean! Regular cleaning and filter replacement is necessary to efficiently maintain and operate your system. Cleanable filters should be washed monthly. Electronic air filters should be cleaned on a regular basis to maintain their high operating efficiency.

 Heating Troubleshooting

If you notice a change in air flow, there are some things you can check before giving us a call.

  • Check that your room thermostat temperature is set above the house temperature as indicated on the thermostat, and the system switch is in the "HEAT" position.
  • Check the blower access panel. Unit will not operate if not firmly in place.
  • On gas furnaces equipped with electronic ignition, turn room thermostat "OFF", allow 5 minutes to pass, then set thermostat back to " HEAT" to reset the ignition system.
  • Do you have the furnace power supply "ON"?
  • Check the circuit breaker panel for a tripped breaker.

If the system is still not operating properly, please call our 24 Emergency Service for assistance.

COOL Air Conditioning Tips

  • Set your thermostat properly. If you desire a colder or warmer temperature for comfort reasons, set the thermostat at the temperature desired. Setting the thermostat way above or below the desired temperature doesn't heat or cool the home quicker.
  • Setting your thermostat below 70 degrees can cause your evaporator coil to freeze up and your system will not cool.
  • Do not locate heat producing appliances or lamps near your thermostat. The heat they give off will affect the performance of your thermostat.
  • Do set your thermostat to conserve energy if you plan to be away from home for a day or more, but don't turn your system off during the winter or summer while you are away.
  • Keep your filter clean! Regular cleaning and filter replacement is necessary to efficiently maintain and operate your system. Cleanable filters should be washed monthly. Electronic air filters should be cleaned on a regular basis to maintain their high operating efficiency.

AC Troubleshooting :
If you notice a change in air flow, there are some things you can check before giving us a call.

  • Inspect the air filter and if dirty replace it with the same size filter. Another possible cause of insufficient air flow is a blocked return-air or air supply-air grill. Make sure that furniture, boxes, etc are not blocking the return air or supply air grill.
  • Check that your room thermostat temperature selector is set below the house temperature as indicated on the thermostat, and the system switch is in the "COOL" position. Warning! Do not turn the thermostat on, off, and back on without allowing a few minutes to pass to avoid short cycling the compressor.
  • Is the outdoor unit power supply switched "ON"?
  • Check the circuit breaker panel for a tripped breaker. If the system is still not operating properly, please call our 24 Emergency Service for assistance.

 Preventative Maintenance Tips
Maintain your heating and air conditioning system with the same respect as you would your automobile. Your air conditioning unit travels an average of 50,000 miles every summer in running time.
Ask your heating and air conditioning dealer for help. Preventive maintenance is cost effective. Early diagnosis of worn parts or improperly operating controls can eliminate a costly and untimely emergency call.
